Proof that a function with nonnegative derivative is increasing
Builds on Mean value theoremInterval
Proof
We apply the mean value theorem on each subinterval.
- Let with . We must show .
- If , then . So assume .
- Since is an interval, every with lies in . So .
- Each is an interior point of , because the open interval contains and lies in .
- So is differentiable at each point of , with there.
- The function is continuous on , so it is continuous on .
- By the mean value theorem, there is with .
- Here by step 5, and . So .
- Thus whenever in , so is increasing on .
Idea
The mean value theorem writes as a value of times . A nonnegative derivative and a positive length give a nonnegative change. So never goes down.
