Definition

Let m>0m > 0, k>0k > 0 and c≥0c \ge 0 be constants, and consider the linear oscillator with viscous damping mx¨+cx˙+kx=0.m \ddot x + c \dot x + k x = 0. The term cx˙c \dot x is the damping force, cc is the damping coefficient, and the damping ratio is ζ=c2mk.\zeta = \frac{c}{2 \sqrt{m k}}. The oscillator is

  1. undamped when ζ=0\zeta = 0;
  2. underdamped when 0<ζ<10 < \zeta < 1;
  3. critically damped when ζ=1\zeta = 1;
  4. overdamped when ζ>1\zeta > 1.

Remarks

With ω0=k/m\omega_0 = \sqrt{k/m} the equation reads x¨+2ζω0x˙+ω02x=0\ddot x + 2 \zeta \omega_0 \dot x + \omega_0^2 x = 0, whose characteristic roots are ω0(−ζ±ζ2−1)\omega_0 \big(-\zeta \pm \sqrt{\zeta^2 - 1}\big); the four cases correspond to imaginary, complex, double real and distinct real roots; see the damped harmonic oscillator. The energy E=12mx˙2+12kx2E = \frac{1}{2} m \dot x^2 + \frac{1}{2} k x^2 satisfies E˙=−cx˙2≤0\dot E = -c \dot x^2 \le 0.

Example: m=1m = 1, c=2c = 2, k=5k = 5 gives ζ=2/(25)=1/5<1\zeta = 2 / (2 \sqrt 5) = 1/\sqrt 5 < 1, so the oscillator is underdamped; its solutions are e−t(c1cos⁡2t+c2sin⁡2t)e^{-t}(c_1 \cos 2t + c_2 \sin 2t).

Non-example: a negative coefficient, c=−2c = -2 with m=1m = 1, k=5k = 5, is not damping: the solutions et(c1cos⁡2t+c2sin⁡2t)e^{t}(c_1 \cos 2t + c_2 \sin 2t) grow, and the energy increases.

Other kinds of damping, such as dry (Coulomb) friction or quadratic drag, are not linear in x˙\dot x and are not covered by this definition.
