Proof
- Let and . By the chain rule and the derivative of the exponential, . By induction on , for each .
- Write . By step 1, , where is the characteristic polynomial.
- Since , each is a solution of the homogeneous equation with constant coefficients on .
- Claim: if are distinct reals, , and for all , then all . We argue by induction on .
- For , and , so .
- Let and assume the claim for exponents. Multiply the relation by . By the exponential of a sum, for all .
- Differentiate, using step 1 and linearity of differentiation: for all .
- The numbers for are distinct. By the induction hypothesis, , and gives for .
- Then , so by step 5. This proves the claim.
- By step 4, are linearly independent in the space of solutions on .
- The constant coefficients are continuous on . By the dimension theorem, has dimension .
- By the basis criterion, linearly independent vectors in form a basis. So is a fundamental system.
- Each solution is a combination of a basis, so it has the form . Conversely each such combination lies in the vector space .
Idea
Each root gives a solution , because differentiating multiplies it by . Exponentials with different rates cannot cancel: dividing by one of them and differentiating removes it, and induction does the rest. Then independent solutions fill the -dimensional solution space.
