Proof

Let a<ba < b and let f ⁣:[a,b]→ℝf \colon [a, b] \to \mathbb{R} be bounded. Write U(P)U(P) and L(P)L(P) for the upper and lower Darboux sums of ff, and U∗U^* and L∗L^* for the upper and lower Darboux integrals.

  1. Let RR be a refinement of a partition QQ. Each subinterval of RR lies in exactly one subinterval JJ of QQ, and the subintervals of RR inside JJ have total length ∣J∣|J|.
  2. On a smaller set the supremum is no larger and the infimum is no smaller. Grouping the terms by step 1 gives U(R)≤U(Q)U(R) \le U(Q) and L(R)≥L(Q)L(R) \ge L(Q).
  3. For any partitions PP and QQ, let RR consist of the points of both. Then L(P)≤L(R)≤U(R)≤U(Q)L(P) \le L(R) \le U(R) \le U(Q) by step 2, since mi≤Mim_i \le M_i on each subinterval.
  4. Taking the supremum over PP and then the infimum over QQ in step 3 gives L∗≤U∗L^* \le U^*.

First assume that ff is Riemann integrable, with integral II.

  1. By the theorem that Darboux and Riemann integrals agree, L∗=U∗=IL^* = U^* = I.
  2. Let ε>0\varepsilon > 0. The number I+ε/2I + \varepsilon/2 is not a lower bound of the upper sums, so there is P1P_1 with U(P1)<I+ε/2U(P_1) < I + \varepsilon / 2. In the same way, there is P2P_2 with L(P2)>I−ε/2L(P_2) > I - \varepsilon/2.
  3. Let PP consist of the points of P1P_1 and P2P_2. By step 2, U(P)−L(P)≤U(P1)−L(P2)<εU(P) - L(P) \le U(P_1) - L(P_2) < \varepsilon.

Now assume that for each ε>0\varepsilon > 0 there is a partition PP with U(P)−L(P)<εU(P) - L(P) < \varepsilon.

  1. Let ε>0\varepsilon > 0 and take such a PP. By the definitions of L∗L^* and U∗U^* and by step 4, L(P)≤L∗≤U∗≤U(P)L(P) \le L^* \le U^* \le U(P).
  2. So 0≤U∗−L∗≤U(P)−L(P)<ε0 \le U^* - L^* \le U(P) - L(P) < \varepsilon. This holds for every ε>0\varepsilon > 0, so U∗=L∗U^* = L^*.
  3. By the theorem that Darboux and Riemann integrals agree, ff is Riemann integrable on [a,b][a, b].

Idea

The upper and lower Darboux integrals are squeezed between L(P)L(P) and U(P)U(P) for every partition PP. So they are equal exactly when the gap U(P)−L(P)U(P) - L(P) can be made as small as we like. Equality of the Darboux integrals is the same as Riemann integrability.
