Definition
Let , let be a function, and let be nonempty. The oscillation of on is a value in . For , the oscillation of at is
Remarks
The quantity decreases as decreases, so the infimum is also the limit as . The function is continuous at if and only if . For each , the set is closed in . So the set of discontinuities of is a countable union of closed subsets of .
Example: let on and . On with , the values fill , a spread of . This tends to , so , as continuity predicts.
Non-example of continuity: the Dirichlet function, equal to on and elsewhere, takes both values on every interval. So its oscillation is at every point, and it is continuous nowhere.
