Functions of a complex variable Proof

Proof of the Schwarz lemma by the maximum modulus principle

Builds on Holomorphic functionHolomorphic functions are analyticDisc of convergencePower series are holomorphic in the disc of convergenceHeine–Borel theoremContinuous real function on a compact set attains its boundsMaximum modulus principle

Proof

  1. Let 𝔻\mathbb{D} and ff be as in the statement. By holomorphic functions are analytic with c=0c = 0 and radius 11, f(z)=∑n≥0anznf(z) = \sum_{n \ge 0} a_n z^n for each z∈𝔻z \in \mathbb{D}.
  2. We have a0=f(0)=0a_0 = f(0) = 0. By power series are holomorphic, differentiating term by term at 00 gives f′(0)=a1f'(0) = a_1.
  3. The series ∑n≥1anzn−1\sum_{n \ge 1} a_n z^{n-1} converges at each z∈𝔻z \in \mathbb{D}: for z≠0z \ne 0 its partial sums are 1/z1/z times those of the series for f(z)f(z).
  4. A power series that converges at ww has bounded terms there. So, by the definition of the radius of convergence, the series of step 3 has radius at least 11.
  5. Let g(z)=∑n≥1anzn−1g(z) = \sum_{n \ge 1} a_n z^{n-1} on 𝔻\mathbb{D}. By power series are holomorphic, gg is holomorphic on 𝔻\mathbb{D}, hence continuous.
  6. By steps 2 and 3, g(z)=f(z)/zg(z) = f(z)/z for z≠0z \ne 0, and g(0)=a1=f′(0)g(0) = a_1 = f'(0).
  7. Claim: for 0<r<10 < r < 1 and ∣z∣≤r\abs{z} \le r, ∣g(z)∣≤1/r\abs{g(z)} \le 1/r. The disc Kr={z:∣z∣≤r}K_r = \set{z : \abs{z} \le r} is compact by the Heine–Borel theorem.
  8. By attainment of bounds, ∣g∣\abs{g} has a maximum on KrK_r at some z∗z^*.
  9. If ∣z∗∣<r\abs{z^*} < r, then ∣g∣\abs{g} has a local maximum at z∗z^* in the domain 𝔻\mathbb{D}. By the maximum modulus principle, gg is constant, so the maximum is also attained on ∣z∣=r\abs{z} = r.
  10. So in all cases the maximum of ∣g∣\abs{g} on KrK_r is attained at a point z′z' with ∣z′∣=r\abs{z'} = r. There ∣g(z′)∣=∣f(z′)∣/r<1/r\abs{g(z')} = \abs{f(z')}/r < 1/r, since ff maps into 𝔻\mathbb{D}. This proves the claim.
  11. Fix z∈𝔻z \in \mathbb{D}. Step 7 holds for every rr with ∣z∣≤r<1\abs{z} \le r < 1. Letting r→1r \to 1 gives ∣g(z)∣≤1\abs{g(z)} \le 1.
  12. For z≠0z \ne 0, step 11 gives ∣f(z)∣≤∣z∣\abs{f(z)} \le \abs{z}, and this also holds at z=0z = 0. At z=0z = 0 it gives ∣f′(0)∣≤1\abs{f'(0)} \le 1.
  13. Now assume ∣f(z0)∣=∣z0∣\abs{f(z_0)} = \abs{z_0} for some z0≠0z_0 \ne 0, or ∣f′(0)∣=1\abs{f'(0)} = 1. Then ∣g(z0)∣=1\abs{g(z_0)} = 1 or ∣g(0)∣=1\abs{g(0)} = 1.
  14. By step 11, ∣g∣≤1\abs{g} \le 1 on 𝔻\mathbb{D}. So ∣g∣\abs{g} has a local maximum at an interior point of 𝔻\mathbb{D}.
  15. By the maximum modulus principle, gg is a constant aa. By step 13, ∣a∣=1\abs{a} = 1.
  16. Then f(z)=zg(z)=azf(z) = z g(z) = a z for z≠0z \ne 0, and also for z=0z = 0 since f(0)=0f(0) = 0.

Idea

Dividing by zz removes the zero at the origin and gives a holomorphic gg with g(0)=f′(0)g(0) = f'(0). On the circle ∣z∣=r\abs{z} = r we have ∣g∣<1/r\abs{g} < 1/r, and the maximum modulus principle carries this bound inside. Letting r→1r \to 1 gives ∣g∣≤1\abs{g} \le 1, and equality at one interior point forces gg to be a constant of modulus one.
