Definition

Let KβŠ‚β„‚K \subset \C be a compact set. Let π’œ(K)\mathcal{A}(K) be the set of holomorphic functions f ⁣:β„‚βˆ–Kβ†’β„‚f \colon \C \setminus K \to \C with ∣f(z)βˆ£β‰€1\abs{f(z)} \le 1 for all zz and f(z)β†’0f(z) \to 0 as zβ†’βˆžz \to \infty. For fβˆˆπ’œ(K)f \in \mathcal{A}(K) put fβ€²(∞)=lim⁑zβ†’βˆžzf(z)f'(\infty) = \lim_{z \to \infty} z f(z); this limit exists. The analytic capacity of KK is Ξ³(K)=sup⁑{∣fβ€²(∞)∣:fβˆˆπ’œ(K)}.\gamma(K) = \sup \set{\abs{f'(\infty)} : f \in \mathcal{A}(K)}.

Remarks

The limit fβ€²(∞)f'(\infty) exists because w↦f(1/w)w \mapsto f(1/w) has a removable singularity at w=0w = 0 with value 00. Example: for the closed disc K={∣zβˆ£β‰€r}K = \set{\abs{z} \le r}, the function r/zr/z lies in π’œ(K)\mathcal{A}(K) with fβ€²(∞)=rf'(\infty) = r. For any fβˆˆπ’œ(K)f \in \mathcal{A}(K), the function g(w)=f(r/w)g(w) = f(r/w) extends to the unit disc with g(0)=0g(0) = 0 and gβ€²(0)=fβ€²(∞)/rg'(0) = f'(\infty)/r. The Schwarz lemma gives ∣gβ€²(0)βˆ£β‰€1\abs{g'(0)} \le 1, so Ξ³(K)=r\gamma(K) = r. Non-example of positive capacity: for a single point K={a}K = \set{a}, each fβˆˆπ’œ(K)f \in \mathcal{A}(K) extends to a bounded entire function by Riemann's theorem on removable singularities. By Liouville's theorem it is constant, hence 00, so Ξ³({a})=0\gamma(\set{a}) = 0. A segment of length β„“\ell has analytic capacity β„“/4\ell/4. Ahlfors proved that Ξ³(K)=0\gamma(K) = 0 if and only if every bounded holomorphic function on Uβˆ–KU \setminus K extends holomorphically to UU, for each open UβŠ‡KU \supseteq K.
