Functions of a complex variable Complex integration Theorem
Borel–Carathéodory theorem
Builds on Holomorphic functionSchwarz lemma
Statement
Let and let be holomorphic on an open set containing the closed disc . Let . Then for each with ,
Remarks
Proof idea: first let and not constant, so that by the mean value property of . Then maps the disc of radius into the unit disc with . The Schwarz lemma gives , and solving for gives on . In general, apply this to , whose real part is at most on . Example: a real constant gives equality. The left side is , and the right side is .

For a student
The theorem is a standard tool for entire functions and in analytic number theory. A typical use is to bound when has no zeros in a disc. There is easy to bound from above. The theorem then bounds and, through Cauchy's estimates, its derivatives. This is a step in the proof of the Hadamard factorization theorem and in zero-free region arguments for the Riemann zeta function.
