Proof that the composition of continuous maps is continuous
Builds on Topological spaceContinuous map of topological spacesFunction compositionPreimage of a setOpen set
Proof
We check the definition of continuity with preimages of open sets.
- Let , and be topological spaces, and let and be continuous.
- Let be an open set of . We show that the preimage is open in .
- Let . By the definition of the composition, holds if and only if .
- This holds if and only if , which holds if and only if .
- By steps 3 and 4, .
- The map is continuous and is open in , so is open in .
- The map is continuous and is open in , so is open in .
- By steps 5 and 7, is open in for each open set of . So is continuous.
Idea
The preimage under a composition is the preimage of a preimage, taken in the opposite order. Each of the two preimage steps keeps open sets open, so the composition does too.
