Definition

Let 𝔥\mathfrak{h} be a complex Hilbert space. Let ℱ±(𝔥)=⨁^n≥0ℋ±(n)\mathcal{F}_\pm(\mathfrak{h}) = \widehat{\bigoplus}_{n \ge 0} \mathcal{H}^{(n)}_\pm be its bosonic (++) or fermionic (−-) Fock space. Here ℋ±(n)⊆𝔥⊗n\mathcal{H}^{(n)}_\pm \subseteq \mathfrak{h}^{\otimes n} is the space of nn identical particles. Second quantization is the passage from 𝔥\mathfrak{h} to ℱ±(𝔥)\mathcal{F}_\pm(\mathfrak{h}) together with the following maps on operators.

  1. For a unitary operator UU on 𝔥\mathfrak{h}, Γ(U)\Gamma(U) is the unitary operator on ℱ±(𝔥)\mathcal{F}_\pm(\mathfrak{h}) that acts on ℋ±(n)\mathcal{H}^{(n)}_\pm as U⊗nU^{\otimes n}. On ℋ±(0)=ℂ\mathcal{H}^{(0)}_\pm = \C it acts as the identity.
  2. For a self-adjoint operator AA on 𝔥\mathfrak{h}, let Dn=ℋ±(n)∩D(A)⊗nD_n = \mathcal{H}^{(n)}_\pm \cap D(A)^{\otimes n}. Here D(A)⊗nD(A)^{\otimes n} is the algebraic tensor power of the domain of AA. On DnD_n let An=∑k=1nI⊗(k−1)⊗A⊗I⊗(n−k)A_n = \sum_{k=1}^n I^{\otimes (k-1)} \otimes A \otimes I^{\otimes (n-k)}, and let A0=0A_0 = 0 on ℂ\C. Then dΓ(A)d\Gamma(A) is the closure of the operator that acts as AnA_n on each DnD_n and is extended linearly to finite sums over nn.

Remarks

The operator dΓ(A)d\Gamma(A) is self-adjoint, and Γ(eitA)=eit dΓ(A)\Gamma(e^{itA}) = e^{it\, d\Gamma(A)} for all t∈ℝt \in \R, so dΓ(A)d\Gamma(A) is the generator given by Stone's theorem. Also Γ(UV)=Γ(U)Γ(V)\Gamma(UV) = \Gamma(U)\Gamma(V).

Example: dΓ(I)=Nd\Gamma(I) = N is the number operator, which acts on ℋ±(n)\mathcal{H}^{(n)}_\pm as multiplication by nn. If Aej=λjejA e_j = \lambda_j e_j for an orthonormal basis (ej)(e_j) of 𝔥\mathfrak{h}, then dΓ(A)=∑jλj a∗(ej) a(ej)d\Gamma(A) = \sum_j \lambda_j\, a^*(e_j)\, a(e_j) on finite-particle vectors in the span of the basis tensors, with the creation and annihilation operators.

Non-example: dΓ(A)d\Gamma(A) is additive over the particles, not multiplicative. For A=λIA = \lambda I with λ∈ℝ\lambda \in \R, the operator dΓ(A)d\Gamma(A) acts on ℋ±(2)\mathcal{H}^{(2)}_\pm as 2λ2\lambda, while A⊗AA \otimes A acts as λ2\lambda^2. So A⊗AA \otimes A is not the second quantization of AA on two particles unless λ∈{0,2}\lambda \in \set{0, 2}.

If H1=−ℏ22mΔH_1 = -\frac{\hbar^2}{2m}\Delta on 𝔥=L2(ℝ3)\mathfrak{h} = L^2(\R^3), then dΓ(H1)d\Gamma(H_1) is the total kinetic energy of a free gas of identical particles with any number of particles.
