Proof
We triangularise over and compute both sides for a triangular matrix.
- If , we view as a complex matrix. Its exponential is given by the same series, and its determinant and trace do not change. So we may assume that is a complex matrix.
- By triangularisation over , there is an invertible complex matrix such that is upper triangular. Write .
- Let . By induction on , . So .
- Each entry of is a fixed linear combination of the entries of . By the definition of and the algebra of limits, letting in step 3 gives .
- Let be upper triangular. For , each term of needs , which is impossible. So is upper triangular. The only nonzero term of has , so .
- By step 5 and induction on , is upper triangular with diagonal entries . This also holds for , with .
- So is upper triangular, and its entry is .
- Letting , is upper triangular. Its entry is the complex exponential .
- By the determinant of a triangular matrix, .
- For complex numbers , the matrices and commute, and their exponentials are and . By the exponential of a sum of commuting matrices, .
- By step 10 and induction on , , where is the trace.
- Since the trace of a product is symmetric, .
- By step 4, . The determinant is multiplicative, and complex numbers commute. So .
- Since and , step 13 gives .
- By steps 9, 11, 12 and 14, .
Idea
Both sides are unchanged when is replaced by a similar matrix. Over , every matrix is similar to a triangular one. For a triangular matrix , the exponential is triangular with diagonal entries , so its determinant is .
