Linear and multilinear algebra; matrix theory Proof

Proof that the determinant of the identity matrix is one

Builds on DeterminantIdentity matrix

Proof

  1. Let InI_n be the n×nn \times n identity matrix over KK.
  2. By property 3 of the definition of the determinant, det⁡In=1\det I_n = 1.

Idea

The determinant is fixed by three properties, and the value 11 on the identity is one of them. This normalization picks one function out of all alternating multilinear functions, which differ from it by a constant factor.

Reading path

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 9 pages in order. The foundations come first.

Show the path as a graph
Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
