Proof of the matrix determinant lemma from Sylvester's determinant theorem
Builds on Invertible matrixDistributivity of matrix multiplicationAssociativity of matrix multiplicationDeterminant is multiplicativeSylvester's determinant theoremLeibniz formula for determinantsIdentity matrix
Proof
We factor out and reduce the rest to a determinant.
- Let be an invertible matrix over , and let be column vectors. Let .
- By distributivity and associativity, .
- By the definition of the inverse, . So , with the identity matrix .
- By the product rule, .
- The matrix is and is . By Sylvester's determinant theorem, .
- The matrix is the matrix with entry .
- By the Leibniz formula for , which has one term, a matrix has its entry as determinant. So .
- By steps 4 to 7, .
Idea
Write . The second factor is the identity plus a column times a row. Sylvester's theorem swaps the order of the column and the row, which turns the determinant into the number .
