Proof that equivalence classes form a partition
Builds on Equivalence relationEquivalence classPartition of a setDisjoint setsAxiom of extensionality
Proof
We check the three properties of a partition.
- Let be an equivalence relation on a set . For , the equivalence class of is . Let .
- Each is a subset of by its definition. So is a set of subsets of .
- Let . By reflexivity, , so . Hence each block is nonempty.
- By step 2, the union of the blocks is contained in . By step 3, each lies in the block . So the union of the blocks is .
- Let and suppose that some lies in . Then and .
- In step 5, let , so . By symmetry, . By transitivity, and give .
- By transitivity again, and give , so . Hence .
- Exchanging the roles of and in steps 6 and 7 gives . So and have the same elements, and by the axiom of extensionality.
- By steps 5 to 8, two blocks with a common element are equal. So two different blocks have no common element. Thus the blocks are pairwise disjoint.
- By steps 3, 4 and 9, the blocks are nonempty, pairwise disjoint, and their union is . So is a partition of .
Idea
Reflexivity puts each element in its own class, so the classes are nonempty and cover . Symmetry and transitivity show that two classes sharing one element have exactly the same elements. So distinct classes cannot overlap.
