Schur product theorem

Builds on Hadamard productPositive semidefinite matrixPositive definite matrixSpectral theorem for Hermitian matrices

Statement

Let n≥1n \ge 1 and let AA and BB be n×nn \times n complex positive semidefinite matrices. Then their Hadamard product A∘BA \circ B, the matrix with entries (A∘B)ij=aijbij(A \circ B)_{ij} = a_{ij} b_{ij}, is positive semidefinite.

Remarks

By the spectral theorem for Hermitian matrices, B=∑kvkvk∗B = \sum_k v_k v_k^* for some vectors vk∈ℂnv_k \in \C^n. For one vector vv, A∘(vv∗)=DAD∗A \circ (v v^*) = D A D^* with D=diag⁡(v1,…,vn)D = \operatorname{diag}(v_1, \ldots, v_n), which is positive semidefinite. So A∘B=∑kDkADk∗A \circ B = \sum_k D_k A D_k^* is a sum of positive semidefinite matrices. Example: A=(2112)A = \begin{pmatrix} 2 & 1 \\ 1 & 2 \end{pmatrix} and B=(1−1−12)B = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & -1 \\ -1 & 2 \end{pmatrix} are positive definite, and A∘B=(2−1−14)A \circ B = \begin{pmatrix} 2 & -1 \\ -1 & 4 \end{pmatrix} has trace 66 and determinant 77, so it is positive definite. If AA and BB are both positive definite, then so is A∘BA \circ B. The hypothesis on BB is needed: with A=I2A = I_2 and B=diag⁡(1,−1)B = \operatorname{diag}(1, -1), A∘B=BA \circ B = B is not positive semidefinite.

Going deeper

For a student

Positive semidefinite matrices are Gram matrices aij=⟨xi,xj⟩a_{ij} = \ip{x_i}{x_j}, and the entrywise product of two Gram matrices is the Gram matrix of the tensor products xi⊗yix_i \otimes y_i; this gives a second proof. The theorem shows that the entrywise power (aijk)(a_{ij}^k) and the entrywise exponential (eaij)(e^{a_{ij}}) of a positive semidefinite matrix are positive semidefinite. This is why sums, products and exponentials of positive definite kernels are again positive definite kernels in machine learning.
