Proof
For , let be the upper left submatrix of , so that is a leading minor.
- Each is Hermitian. Indeed its entry is , because is Hermitian.
- First assume that is positive definite, and fix . Let with , and let be followed by zeros.
- Then , and , where is the conjugate transpose. So , and is positive definite.
- By the fundamental theorem of algebra, the characteristic polynomial of splits over as .
- Each is a root of the characteristic polynomial, so it is an eigenvalue of . By the positivity of eigenvalues and step 3, each is a positive real.
- Since the determinant is the product of the eigenvalues, . This proves one direction.
- For the converse we argue by induction on . Assume for all . For , with , and for .
- Let , and let . The leading minors of are , which are positive. By step 1 and the induction hypothesis, is positive definite.
- Since is Hermitian, it has the block form with and .
- Since , the matrix is invertible. Conjugating gives , using from the transpose of a product.
- By step 10, , since a matrix has only one inverse.
- Let and . Let , where is the identity.
- Block multiplication gives .
- We have , and by step 11. So .
- By steps 13 and 14, .
- The matrices and are triangular with all diagonal entries . By the determinant of a triangular matrix, .
- By the multiplicativity of the determinant and the determinant of a block triangular matrix, .
- So .
- Let with . By step 16, is invertible. Let , so . Write with .
- By step 15, .
- Both terms are at least , by steps 8 and 18. If , the first term is positive. Otherwise , and the second term is positive.
- So for all . As is Hermitian, is positive definite. This completes the induction and the proof.
Idea
Positive definiteness passes to the top left blocks, and a positive definite matrix has positive determinant. For the converse, a change of variables splits off the last coordinate. It writes the form as the form of plus , and the determinants show that is positive.
