Proof

  1. Since ff is differentiable at aa, it has a derivative L=f′(a)L = f'(a). For h≠0h \ne 0 with a+h∈Ia + h \in I, write q(h)=f(a+h)−f(a)hq(h) = \frac{f(a + h) - f(a)}{h}. Then q(h)→Lq(h) \to L as h→0h \to 0.
  2. By the epsilon-delta form of limits with ε=1\varepsilon = 1, there is δ1>0\delta_1 > 0 with ∣q(h)−L∣<1\abs{q(h) - L} < 1 whenever 0<∣h∣<δ10 < \abs{h} < \delta_1 and a+h∈Ia + h \in I.
  3. For such hh, the triangle inequality gives ∣q(h)∣≤∣q(h)−L∣+∣L∣<∣L∣+1\abs{q(h)} \le \abs{q(h) - L} + \abs{L} < \abs{L} + 1.
  4. So ∣f(a+h)−f(a)∣=∣q(h)∣ ∣h∣≤(∣L∣+1)∣h∣\abs{f(a + h) - f(a)} = \abs{q(h)} \, \abs{h} \le (\abs{L} + 1) \abs{h} for these hh. This also holds for h=0h = 0, where both sides are 00.
  5. Let ε>0\varepsilon > 0. Put δ=min⁡(δ1,ε∣L∣+1)>0\delta = \min\left(\delta_1, \frac{\varepsilon}{\abs{L} + 1}\right) > 0.
  6. Let x∈Ix \in I with ∣x−a∣<δ\abs{x - a} < \delta, and put h=x−ah = x - a. By step 4, ∣f(x)−f(a)∣≤(∣L∣+1)∣h∣<(∣L∣+1)⋅ε∣L∣+1=ε\abs{f(x) - f(a)} \le (\abs{L} + 1) \abs{h} < (\abs{L} + 1) \cdot \frac{\varepsilon}{\abs{L} + 1} = \varepsilon.
  7. By the epsilon-delta form of continuity, ff is continuous at aa.

Idea

Near aa, the difference quotient stays close to f′(a)f'(a), so it is bounded. Then f(x)−f(a)f(x) - f(a) is a bounded number times x−ax - a. This product is small when xx is close to aa.
