Proof

We show that ζ=e2πi/n\zeta = e^{2 \pi i / n} is a primitive nnth root of unity.

  1. Let n≥1n \ge 1 and ζ=e2πi/n\zeta = e^{2 \pi i / n}. For real arguments the power series of cos⁡\cos and sin⁡\sin are the real sine and cosine. So Euler's formula gives ζ=cos⁡2πn+isin⁡2πn\zeta = \cos \frac{2 \pi}{n} + i \sin \frac{2 \pi}{n}.
  2. For each integer k≥1k \ge 1, de Moivre's formula gives ζk=cos⁡tk+isin⁡tk\zeta^k = \cos t_k + i \sin t_k with tk=2πk/nt_k = 2 \pi k / n.
  3. For k=nk = n we get tn=2πt_n = 2 \pi. Since sin⁡\sin and cos⁡\cos are 2π2\pi-periodic, cos⁡2π=cos⁡0=1\cos 2 \pi = \cos 0 = 1 and sin⁡2π=sin⁡0=0\sin 2 \pi = \sin 0 = 0. So ζn=1\zeta^n = 1.
  4. Now let 1≤k<n1 \le k < n, so 0<tk<2π0 < t_k < 2 \pi. Assume, for a contradiction, that ζk=1\zeta^k = 1.
  5. By equality of complex numbers, cos⁡tk=1\cos t_k = 1 and sin⁡tk=0\sin t_k = 0.
  6. Let t=tkt = t_k if tk≤πt_k \le \pi, and t=tk−2πt = t_k - 2 \pi if tk>πt_k > \pi. In both cases −π<t≤π-\pi < t \le \pi and t≠0t \neq 0.
  7. By periodicity, cos⁡t=1\cos t = 1 and sin⁡t=0\sin t = 0. So 1=1⋅(cos⁡t+isin⁡t)1 = 1 \cdot (\cos t + i \sin t), and tt is an argument of 11, since ∣1∣=1|1| = 1.
  8. Also 00 is an argument of 11 in (−π,π](-\pi, \pi], since cos⁡0=1\cos 0 = 1 and sin⁡0=0\sin 0 = 0.
  9. The principal value of the argument is unique, so t=0t = 0. This contradicts step 6.
  10. So ζk≠1\zeta^k \neq 1 for 1≤k<n1 \le k < n, and ζn=1\zeta^n = 1 by step 3. By the definition of a primitive root of unity, ζ\zeta is a primitive nnth root of unity.

Idea

The powers ζk\zeta^k are the points of the unit circle at angles 2πk/n2 \pi k / n. For 1≤k<n1 \le k < n the angle lies strictly between 00 and 2π2 \pi, so the point is not 11. The first power that returns to 11 is the nnth.
