Proof of de Moivre's formula from Euler's formula

Builds on Euler's formulaProduct of exponentialsComplex exponentialSine and cosine

Proof

  1. Let xx be real. Since xx is real, the power series of cos⁡x\cos x and sin⁡x\sin x are the real sine and cosine. So Euler's formula gives eix=cos⁡x+isin⁡xe^{i x} = \cos x + i \sin x for every real xx.
  2. In the series for the complex exponential at 00, every term with k≥1k \ge 1 is 00. So e0=1e^0 = 1.
  3. Claim: (eix)n=einx(e^{i x})^n = e^{i n x} for each integer n≥0n \ge 0 and each real xx. We argue by induction on nn.
  4. For n=0n = 0, both sides equal 11, by step 2.
  5. Assume the claim for nn. By the product of exponentials, (eix)n+1=einxeix=ei(n+1)x(e^{i x})^{n+1} = e^{i n x} e^{i x} = e^{i (n + 1) x}. This proves the claim.
  6. By the product of exponentials and step 2, eixe−ix=e0=1e^{i x} e^{-i x} = e^0 = 1. So eix≠0e^{i x} \neq 0 and (eix)−1=e−ix(e^{i x})^{-1} = e^{-i x}. Thus negative powers of eixe^{i x} are defined.
  7. Let n=−mn = -m with mm a positive integer. Then (eix)n=((eix)−1)m=(e−ix)m(e^{i x})^n = \bigl((e^{i x})^{-1}\bigr)^m = (e^{-i x})^m, by step 6.
  8. Step 3, applied to the real number −x-x, gives (e−ix)m=e−imx=einx(e^{-i x})^m = e^{-i m x} = e^{i n x}. So (eix)n=einx(e^{i x})^n = e^{i n x} for every integer nn.
  9. By step 1 for xx and for nxn x, (cos⁡x+isin⁡x)n=(eix)n=einx=cos⁡(nx)+isin⁡(nx)(\cos x + i \sin x)^n = (e^{i x})^n = e^{i n x} = \cos(n x) + i \sin(n x).

Idea

Euler's formula turns cos⁡x+isin⁡x\cos x + i \sin x into eixe^{i x}. Powers of an exponential multiply the exponent, because exponentials turn sums into products. Negative powers work since e−ixe^{-ix} is the inverse of eixe^{ix}.
