Real functions Proof

Proof that the absolute value is multiplicative

Builds on Absolute valueThe reals form an ordered field

Proof

We argue by cases on the signs of aa and bb.

  1. Let aa and bb be real numbers. By the definition of the absolute value, ∣z∣=z\abs{z} = z when z≥0z \ge 0.
  2. Also ∣z∣=−z\abs{z} = -z when z≤0z \le 0. For z<0z < 0 this is the definition, and for z=0z = 0 both sides are 00.
  3. In the ordered field ℝ\R, the product of two nonnegative numbers is nonnegative. If u<0u < 0, then −u>0-u > 0, by adding −u-u to both sides.
  4. Case a≥0a \ge 0 and b≥0b \ge 0. Then ab≥0a b \ge 0, so ∣ab∣=ab=∣a∣∣b∣\abs{a b} = a b = \abs{a} \abs{b}.
  5. Case a≥0a \ge 0 and b<0b < 0. Then −b>0-b > 0 and a(−b)≥0a (-b) \ge 0, so ab≤0a b \le 0. By step 2, ∣ab∣=−(ab)=a(−b)=∣a∣∣b∣\abs{a b} = -(a b) = a (-b) = \abs{a} \abs{b}.
  6. Case a<0a < 0 and b≥0b \ge 0. This is step 5 with aa and bb exchanged, since ab=baa b = b a.
  7. Case a<0a < 0 and b<0b < 0. Then ab=(−a)(−b)≥0a b = (-a)(-b) \ge 0, so ∣ab∣=(−a)(−b)=∣a∣∣b∣\abs{a b} = (-a)(-b) = \abs{a} \abs{b}.
  8. The four cases cover all pairs (a,b)(a, b), since the order is total. So ∣ab∣=∣a∣∣b∣\abs{a b} = \abs{a} \abs{b}.

Idea

The absolute value removes the sign. The sign of a product follows from the signs of the factors, and the sizes simply multiply.
