Real functions Proof

Proof of the integral of the exponential function

Builds on Exponential functionThe exponential function is its own derivativeDifferentiable functions are continuousContinuous functions are Riemann integrableSecond fundamental theorem of calculusDefinite integral

Proof

We use that the exponential function is an antiderivative of itself.

  1. Let F=exp⁡F = \exp, the exponential function, and write ex=exp⁡(x)e^x = \exp(x).
  2. By the derivative of exp, FF is differentiable on ℝ\R and F′=FF' = F.
  3. Differentiable functions are continuous, so FF is continuous on ℝ\R.
  4. Assume a<ba < b. By step 3, FF is Riemann integrable on [a,b][a, b]. By steps 2 and 3, the second fundamental theorem of calculus applies to FF with F′=FF' = F. It gives ∫abex dx=eb−ea\int_a^b e^x \, dx = e^b - e^a.
  5. Assume a=ba = b. By the convention for the definite integral, ∫aaex dx=0=ea−ea\int_a^a e^x \, dx = 0 = e^a - e^a.
  6. Assume a>ba > b. By the same convention and step 4 on [b,a][b, a], ∫abex dx=−(ea−eb)=eb−ea\int_a^b e^x \, dx = -(e^a - e^b) = e^b - e^a.
  7. So ∫abex dx=eb−ea\int_a^b e^x \, dx = e^b - e^a for all real aa and bb.

Idea

The exponential function is its own derivative, so it is its own antiderivative. The fundamental theorem of calculus then evaluates the integral as a difference of two values of exe^x.
