Proof of the sum of a finite geometric series

Builds on Geometric sequence

Proof

We multiply the sum by 1−r1 - r and observe that the result telescopes.

  1. Let Sn=∑k=0n−1rkS_n = \sum_{k=0}^{n-1} r^k, the sum of the first nn terms of the geometric sequence 1,r,r2,…1, r, r^2, \dots. For n=0n = 0 the sum is empty, so S0=0S_0 = 0.
  2. Multiply by rr: rSn=∑k=0n−1rk+1=∑k=1nrkr S_n = \sum_{k=0}^{n-1} r^{k+1} = \sum_{k=1}^{n} r^k.
  3. Subtract step 2 from the definition of SnS_n. Every power rkr^k with 1≤k≤n−11 \le k \le n-1 appears once with each sign and cancels.
  4. What remains is Sn−rSn=r0−rn=1−rnS_n - r S_n = r^0 - r^n = 1 - r^n. This also holds for n=0n = 0, since both sides are 00.
  5. So (1−r)Sn=1−rn(1 - r) S_n = 1 - r^n.
  6. Since r≠1r \ne 1, the number 1−r1 - r is not zero. Dividing step 5 by 1−r1 - r gives ∑k=0n−1rk=1−rn1−r.\sum_{k=0}^{n-1} r^k = \frac{1 - r^n}{1 - r}.

Idea

Multiplying by rr shifts every term one place to the right. So the sum and rr times the sum share all terms but the first and the last. Subtracting leaves only 1−rn1 - r^n.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
