Functions of a complex variable Proof

Proof of the polar form of a complex number

Builds on Principal value of the argumentArgument of a complex numberModulus of a complex numberEuler's formulaSine and cosine

Proof

  1. Let z≠0z \neq 0, let r=∣z∣r = |z| be its modulus and let θ=Arg⁡z\theta = \operatorname{Arg} z.
  2. By the principal value of the argument, θ\theta is an argument of zz.
  3. By the definition of an argument, z=r(cos⁡θ+isin⁡θ)z = r (\cos \theta + i \sin \theta).
  4. The number θ\theta is real. For real arguments, the power series of cos⁡\cos and sin⁡\sin are the real sine and cosine. So Euler's formula with z=θz = \theta gives eiθ=cos⁡θ+isin⁡θe^{i \theta} = \cos \theta + i \sin \theta.
  5. Combining steps 3 and 4, z=r(cos⁡θ+isin⁡θ)=reiθz = r (\cos \theta + i \sin \theta) = r e^{i \theta}.

Idea

The first equality is just the meaning of the word argument, once we know that the principal argument is an argument. The second equality rewrites cos⁡θ+isin⁡θ\cos \theta + i \sin \theta with Euler's formula.
