Proof of the double negation law by a truth table

Builds on PropositionNegationLogical equivalenceTruth table

Proof

We compare the truth tables of ¬¬p\neg \neg p and pp.

  1. Let pp be a proposition. In classical logic, pp is either true or false.
  2. Suppose pp is true. By the definition of negation, ¬p\neg p is false. Applying the definition again, ¬¬p\neg \neg p is true.
  3. Suppose pp is false. By the definition of negation, ¬p\neg p is true. Applying the definition again, ¬¬p\neg \neg p is false.
  4. The truth table is this.
pp ¬p\neg p ¬¬p\neg \neg p
T F T
F T F
  1. By steps 1, 2 and 3, ¬¬p\neg \neg p and pp have the same truth value for each truth value of pp.
  2. So ¬¬p\neg \neg p and pp are logically equivalent, that is, ¬¬p≡p\neg \neg p \equiv p.

Idea

Negation swaps true and false. Swapping twice gives back the original truth value, so ¬¬p\neg \neg p always agrees with pp.

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 11 pages in order. The foundations come first.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
