Real functions Proof

Proof that the curl of a gradient is zero

Builds on CurlGradientSchwarz's theorem for C^2 functionsC^k function characterised by continuous derivativesContinuous partial derivatives imply differentiabilityHigher partial derivatives

Proof

We compute the curl in coordinates and use the symmetry of second derivatives.

  1. Let ϕ ⁣:U→ℝ\phi \colon U \to \R be of class C2C^2 on the open set U⊆ℝ3U \subseteq \R^3. Its first partial derivatives are continuous, so ϕ\phi is differentiable by continuous partial derivatives imply differentiability.
  2. By the coordinate form of the gradient, ∇ϕ=(ϕx,ϕy,ϕz)\nabla \phi = (\phi_x, \phi_y, \phi_z), where ϕx=∂ϕ/∂x\phi_x = \partial \phi / \partial x and so on.
  3. The components of ∇ϕ\nabla \phi have first partial derivatives on UU, since ϕ\phi is C2C^2. For variables u,v∈{x,y,z}u, v \in \set{x, y, z}, write ∂uϕv\partial_u \phi_v for the second partial derivative ∂2ϕ/∂u ∂v\partial^2 \phi / \partial u \, \partial v.
  4. By the definition of the curl with (P,Q,R)=(ϕx,ϕy,ϕz)(P, Q, R) = (\phi_x, \phi_y, \phi_z), ∇×(∇ϕ)=(∂yϕz−∂zϕy, ∂zϕx−∂xϕz, ∂xϕy−∂yϕx)\nabla \times (\nabla \phi) = \big( \partial_y \phi_z - \partial_z \phi_y, \ \partial_z \phi_x - \partial_x \phi_z, \ \partial_x \phi_y - \partial_y \phi_x \big).
  5. By Schwarz's theorem, ∂yϕz=∂zϕy\partial_y \phi_z = \partial_z \phi_y, ∂zϕx=∂xϕz\partial_z \phi_x = \partial_x \phi_z and ∂xϕy=∂yϕx\partial_x \phi_y = \partial_y \phi_x at each point of UU.
  6. So each component in step 4 is 00, and ∇×(∇ϕ)=0\nabla \times (\nabla \phi) = 0 on UU.

Idea

Each component of the curl of ∇ϕ\nabla \phi is a difference of two mixed second partial derivatives of ϕ\phi, taken in the two possible orders. For a C2C^2 function these agree, so every component vanishes.
