Proof

We compare the Euclidean norm of a vector with the absolute values of its entries.

  1. Let UU, ff, aa and LL be as in the statement. The component LjL_j is the map h↦(Lh)jh \mapsto (L h)_j. It is linear, since LL is linear and taking the jj-th entry is linear.
  2. For hh with a+h∈Ua + h \in U, put r(h)=f(a+h)−f(a)−Lh∈ℝmr(h) = f(a + h) - f(a) - L h \in \mathbb{R}^m. Its entries are rj(h)=fj(a+h)−fj(a)−Ljhr_j(h) = f_j(a + h) - f_j(a) - L_j h.
  3. For each v∈ℝmv \in \mathbb{R}^m and each jj, we have ∣vj∣≤∥v∥|v_j| \le \|v\|, since vj2≤v12+⋯+vm2v_j^2 \le v_1^2 + \dots + v_m^2.
  4. For each v∈ℝmv \in \mathbb{R}^m, we have ∥v∥≤∣v1∣+⋯+∣vm∣\|v\| \le |v_1| + \dots + |v_m|. Indeed, the square of the right side is ∑jvj2\sum_j v_j^2 plus nonnegative cross terms.
  5. Suppose that ff is differentiable at aa with Df(a)=LDf(a) = L. So ∥r(h)∥/∥h∥→0\|r(h)\| / \|h\| \to 0 as h→0h \to 0.
  6. By step 3, 0≤∣rj(h)∣/∥h∥≤∥r(h)∥/∥h∥0 \le |r_j(h)| / \|h\| \le \|r(h)\| / \|h\| for each h≠0h \ne 0. So ∣rj(h)∣/∥h∥→0|r_j(h)| / \|h\| \to 0.
  7. On ℝ\mathbb{R}, the Euclidean norm is the absolute value. So step 6 says that fjf_j is differentiable at aa with Dfj(a)=LjDf_j(a) = L_j, for each jj.
  8. Conversely, suppose that each fjf_j is differentiable at aa with Dfj(a)=LjDf_j(a) = L_j. So ∣rj(h)∣/∥h∥→0|r_j(h)| / \|h\| \to 0 for each jj.
  9. By step 4, 0≤∥r(h)∥/∥h∥≤∑j=1m∣rj(h)∣/∥h∥0 \le \|r(h)\| / \|h\| \le \sum_{j=1}^m |r_j(h)| / \|h\| for each h≠0h \ne 0. The right side is a sum of mm terms that tend to 00.
  10. So ∥r(h)∥/∥h∥→0\|r(h)\| / \|h\| \to 0, and ff is differentiable at aa with Df(a)=LDf(a) = L.

Idea

A vector in Euclidean space is small exactly when all its entries are small. The error of ff is the vector of the errors of its components. So ff is well approximated by LL exactly when each fjf_j is well approximated by the matching row LjL_j.
