Incompressible flow
Builds on Fluid dynamicsMaterial derivativeDivergenceContinuity equation
Definition
Let a fluid flow on an open set and an open interval have density and velocity . Assume both are continuously differentiable and satisfy the continuity equation. The flow is incompressible if the material derivative of the density vanishes:
Remarks
Since the continuity equation reads and , the flow is incompressible if and only if the divergence of the velocity is zero, . Equivalently, the flow map preserves the volume of every region of fluid. Example: the plane flow with constant density is incompressible; check: . Non-example: the flow has divergence , so it is not incompressible; the fluid spreads out and its density must fall. Incompressible does not mean constant density: a stratified ocean with density varying in depth can still flow incompressibly.
