Functions of a complex variable Proof

Proof of Morera's theorem by a local primitive

Builds on Contour integralHolomorphic functionComplex differentiabilityIntegration by substitutionEstimation lemmaHolomorphic functions are infinitely differentiable

Proof

  1. Let U⊆ℂU \subseteq \C be open and let f:U→ℂf : U \to \C be continuous. Assume ∮∂Tf(z) dz=0\oint_{\partial T} f(z) \, dz = 0 for each closed triangle T⊆UT \subseteq U.
  2. For a,b∈ℂa, b \in \C, let [a,b][a, b] be the segment path t↦a+t(b−a)t \mapsto a + t(b - a), t∈[0,1]t \in [0, 1]. All integrals below are contour integrals.
  3. Reversing a segment changes the sign: ∫[b,a]f=−∫[a,b]f\int_{[b, a]} f = -\int_{[a, b]} f. This follows from the substitution t↦1−tt \mapsto 1 - t.
  4. Fix c∈Uc \in U and R>0R > 0 with B={z:∣z−c∣<R}⊆UB = \set{z : \abs{z - c} < R} \subseteq U. It suffices to show that ff is holomorphic on each such disc BB.
  5. For z∈Bz \in B, define F(z)=∫[c,z]f(w) dwF(z) = \int_{[c, z]} f(w) \, dw. The segment [c,z][c, z] lies in BB because BB is convex.
  6. Let z∈Bz \in B and let h≠0h \ne 0 with z+h∈Bz + h \in B. The triangle TT with vertices cc, zz, z+hz + h lies in BB, by convexity.
  7. Claim: ∫[c,z]f+∫[z,z+h]f+∫[z+h,c]f=0\int_{[c, z]} f + \int_{[z, z + h]} f + \int_{[z + h, c]} f = 0. If the vertices are not collinear, the left side is ±∮∂Tf\pm \oint_{\partial T} f, so it is 00 by step 1.
  8. If the vertices are collinear, they lie on a line s↦c+sus \mapsto c + s u with ∣u∣=1\abs{u} = 1. By substitution, each segment integral becomes ∫f(c+su) u ds\int f(c + s u) \, u \, ds over an interval of ss. The three intervals add to zero by additivity of the integral, which proves the claim.
  9. By steps 3 and 7, F(z+h)−F(z)=∫[z,z+h]f(w) dwF(z + h) - F(z) = \int_{[z, z + h]} f(w) \, dw.
  10. Also ∫[z,z+h]f(z) dw=∫01f(z) h dt=f(z) h\int_{[z, z + h]} f(z) \, dw = \int_0^1 f(z) \, h \, dt = f(z) \, h. So F(z+h)−F(z)h−f(z)=1h∫[z,z+h](f(w)−f(z)) dw.\frac{F(z + h) - F(z)}{h} - f(z) = \frac{1}{h} \int_{[z, z + h]} \bigl( f(w) - f(z) \bigr) \, dw.
  11. Let ε>0\varepsilon > 0. Since ff is continuous at zz, there is δ>0\delta > 0 with ∣f(w)−f(z)∣<ε\abs{f(w) - f(z)} < \varepsilon for ∣w−z∣<δ\abs{w - z} < \delta.
  12. For 0<∣h∣<δ0 < \abs{h} < \delta, each ww on [z,z+h][z, z + h] satisfies ∣w−z∣<δ\abs{w - z} < \delta. The segment has length ∣h∣\abs{h}.
  13. By the estimation lemma and step 12, the right side of step 10 has modulus at most 1∣h∣⋅ε∣h∣=ε\frac{1}{\abs{h}} \cdot \varepsilon \abs{h} = \varepsilon.
  14. So FF is complex differentiable at zz with F′(z)=f(z)F'(z) = f(z). Thus FF is holomorphic on BB and F′=fF' = f there.
  15. By holomorphic functions are infinitely differentiable, F′F' is holomorphic on BB. So ff is holomorphic on BB.
  16. Each point of UU lies in such a disc BB. So ff is complex differentiable at each point of UU, and ff is holomorphic on UU.

Idea

On a disc, integrating ff along segments from the center gives a function FF. The triangle condition makes the difference F(z+h)−F(z)F(z + h) - F(z) an integral over the short segment from zz to z+hz + h, so continuity of ff gives F′=fF' = f. The derivative of a holomorphic function is holomorphic, so ff is holomorphic.
