Proof
- Let , and be as in the statement. Each is continuous, since a complex differentiable function is continuous at each point.
- Claim: is continuous. Let and pick with the closed disc . It is compact by the Heine–Borel theorem.
- Let . By uniform convergence on , choose with on . Choose with for .
- For , . This proves the claim.
- Let be an open disc, and let be a closed triangle with boundary path of length .
- By holomorphic functions on a disc have primitives, each has a primitive on . By the fundamental theorem of contour integration, .
- The triangle is closed and bounded, hence compact. Let . Then .
- By step 6 and the estimation lemma, for each . So .
- By steps 4 and 8 and Morera's theorem on , is holomorphic on .
- Each point of lies in an open disc . So is holomorphic on .
- Now let be compact. If is empty, there is nothing to prove, so let be nonempty. Claim: there is such that is a compact subset of .
- If , take . Otherwise let . Then , so is continuous.
- Since is open, on . By attainment of bounds, has a positive minimum on . Let be half of it. Then .
- The set is bounded since is. It is closed: if tends to , pick with .
- By sequential compactness of , a subsequence of tends to some . Then , so . By Heine–Borel, is compact, which proves the claim.
- Let . By uniform convergence on the compact set , .
- Let . The closed disc of radius around lies in , and is holomorphic on by step 10.
- By Cauchy's estimates with for on this disc, .
- The bound in step 18 does not depend on and tends to . So uniformly on .
Idea
Integrals over triangles pass to the limit under uniform convergence. Each has zero integral over small triangles, so does too, and Morera's theorem makes holomorphic. For the derivatives, Cauchy's estimates bound at a point by the size of on a nearby circle.
