Proof that Lipschitz functions are uniformly continuous
Builds on Lipschitz continuityUniform continuity
Proof
- Since is Lipschitz, there is a real with for all .
- Let . Put . Then , since .
- Let with . By step 1, .
- Since and , we have . So .
- The number depends only on , not on or . So is uniformly continuous.
Idea
The Lipschitz bound controls the change of by a fixed multiple of the change of . So one , a fixed fraction of , works at every point. Using instead of avoids division by zero when .
