Proof

  1. Let UU, uu, cc and rr be as in the statement, and let K={z:∣z−c∣≤r}⊆UK = \set{z : \abs{z - c} \le r} \subseteq U.
  2. Claim: there is R′>rR' > r with B={z:∣z−c∣<R′}⊆UB = \set{z : \abs{z - c} < R'} \subseteq U. Suppose not. Then for each n≥1n \ge 1 there is wn∉Uw_n \notin U with ∣wn−c∣<r+1/n\abs{w_n - c} < r + 1/n.
  3. The points wnw_n lie in the closed disc of radius r+1r + 1 around cc, which is compact. By sequential compactness, a subsequence converges to some ww with ∣w−c∣≤r\abs{w - c} \le r.
  4. Then w∈K⊆Uw \in K \subseteq U. Since UU is open, the subsequence eventually lies in UU. This contradicts wn∉Uw_n \notin U, which proves the claim.
  5. On BB, let P=uxP = u_x and Q=−uyQ = -u_y, and let g=P+iQg = P + iQ. Since uu is twice continuously differentiable, PP and QQ have continuous partial derivatives.
  6. So PP and QQ are differentiable on BB, by continuous partial derivatives imply differentiability.
  7. We have Px=uxxP_x = u_{xx} and Qy=−uyyQ_y = -u_{yy}. These are equal because uxx+uyy=0u_{xx} + u_{yy} = 0.
  8. We have Py=uxyP_y = u_{xy} and −Qx=uyx-Q_x = u_{yx}. These are equal by Schwarz's theorem.
  9. By steps 6 to 8 and the Cauchy–Riemann equations, gg is complex differentiable at each point of BB. So gg is holomorphic on BB.
  10. By holomorphic functions on a disc have primitives, there is a holomorphic FF on BB with F′=gF' = g. Write F=U1+iV1F = U_1 + i V_1 with U1,V1U_1, V_1 real.
  11. By the Cauchy–Riemann equations for FF, F′=∂xU1+i∂xV1F' = \partial_x U_1 + i \partial_x V_1 and ∂xV1=−∂yU1\partial_x V_1 = -\partial_y U_1. So F′=∂xU1−i∂yU1F' = \partial_x U_1 - i \partial_y U_1.
  12. Comparing with g=ux−iuyg = u_x - i u_y gives ∂xU1=ux\partial_x U_1 = u_x and ∂yU1=uy\partial_y U_1 = u_y on BB.
  13. Let w=U1−uw = U_1 - u on BB. It is differentiable, since U1U_1 is (step 11) and uu is (step 6 applied to uu). Its total derivative is 00 by step 12.
  14. The disc BB is path-connected along segments, so it is connected by path-connected spaces are connected. By zero derivative implies constant, ww equals a real constant kk.
  15. Let H=F−kH = F - k. Then HH is holomorphic on BB, and Re⁡H=U1−k=u\operatorname{Re} H = U_1 - k = u on BB.
  16. The closed disc KK lies in BB. By Cauchy's integral formula with a=ca = c and the parametrization of the circle integral, H(c)=12πi∫02πH(c+reiθ)reiθ ireiθ dθ=12π∫02πH(c+reiθ) dθ.H(c) = \frac{1}{2\pi i} \int_0^{2\pi} \frac{H(c + r e^{i\theta})}{r e^{i\theta}} \, i r e^{i\theta} \, d\theta = \frac{1}{2\pi} \int_0^{2\pi} H(c + r e^{i\theta}) \, d\theta.
  17. The integral of a complex function is defined through its real and imaginary parts, as for the contour integral. Taking real parts in step 16 and using step 15 gives u(c)=12π∫02πu(c+reiθ) dθu(c) = \frac{1}{2\pi} \int_0^{2\pi} u(c + r e^{i\theta}) \, d\theta.

Idea

On a disc slightly larger than the given one, the harmonic function uu is the real part of a holomorphic function HH. The function ux−iuyu_x - i u_y is holomorphic by the Cauchy–Riemann equations, and HH is its primitive up to a constant. Cauchy's integral formula at the center says that H(c)H(c) is the average of HH on the circle. Taking real parts gives the same for uu.
