Proof that a linear map between normed spaces is continuous if and only if it is bounded
Builds on Continuous linear mapLipschitz mapContinuity via open setsOpen balls are openOpen sets of a metric space
Proof
We prove both directions. The metrics are and .
- Suppose is bounded, with for all . By linearity, . So is Lipschitz with constant .
- Let and , and let . If , then .
- By continuity via open sets, is continuous. So is a continuous linear map.
- Conversely, suppose is continuous. The open ball is open, so is open in .
- Since , we have . By the ball criterion, there is with whenever .
- Let , and let with . Put . Then , so .
- By linearity, . So .
- For , . So for all , with , and is bounded.
Idea
A bound makes Lipschitz, hence continuous. Conversely, continuity at gives a small ball that maps into the unit ball. Linearity lets us rescale any vector into that small ball, which yields the bound.
