Definition

Let S⊆ℝ3S \subseteq \R^3 be a regular surface with a smooth unit normal vector field NN. Let α ⁣:I→S\alpha \colon I \to S be a curve of class C2C^2 parametrised by arc length on an interval II. The geodesic curvature of α\alpha at s∈Is \in I is κg(s)=⟨α′′(s),N(α(s))×α′(s)⟩,\kappa_g(s) = \ip{\alpha''(s)}{N(\alpha(s)) \times \alpha'(s)}, where ×\times is the cross product. The normal curvature of α\alpha at ss is κn(s)=⟨α′′(s),N(α(s))⟩\kappa_n(s) = \ip{\alpha''(s)}{N(\alpha(s))}.

Remarks

Since α′\alpha', N×α′N \times \alpha' and NN form an orthonormal basis and ⟨α′′,α′⟩=0\ip{\alpha''}{\alpha'} = 0, one has α′′=κg N×α′+κnN\alpha'' = \kappa_g \, N \times \alpha' + \kappa_n N. So κ2=κg2+κn2\kappa^2 = \kappa_g^2 + \kappa_n^2, where κ\kappa is the curvature of α\alpha as a space curve. Example: on the unit sphere with the outer normal N(p)=pN(p) = p, a great circle α\alpha satisfies α′′=−α\alpha'' = -\alpha, which is normal to the sphere, so κg=0\kappa_g = 0. A circle of latitude at polar angle φ0∈(0,π)\varphi_0 \in (0, \pi) has κ=1/sin⁡φ0\kappa = 1 / \sin \varphi_0 and ∣κg∣=∣cot⁡φ0∣\abs{\kappa_g} = \abs{\cot \varphi_0}. Non-example: for a curve that is not of unit speed, the formula above is not the geodesic curvature; one must first reparametrise by arc length. For a curve in the xyxy-plane with N=(0,0,1)N = (0, 0, 1), the geodesic curvature is the signed curvature of the plane curve.
