Definition

Let Ω⊆ℝ3\Omega \subseteq \R^3 be an open set, and let point charges q1,…,qnq_1, \dots, q_n lie at points x1,…,xn∈Ωx_1, \dots, x_n \in \Omega. The problem is to find a potential φ\varphi that solves Poisson's equation in Ω\Omega with these charges and has φ=0\varphi = 0 on ∂Ω\partial \Omega. When Ω\Omega is unbounded, φ(x)→0\varphi(x) \to 0 as ∣x∣→∞\abs{x} \to \infty is also required. The method of image charges looks for image charges q1′,…,qm′q'_1, \dots, q'_m at points x1′,…,xm′x'_1, \dots, x'_m outside Ω‾\overline{\Omega}. They must make the electric potential of all real and image charges together vanish on ∂Ω\partial \Omega. The restriction of that potential to Ω\Omega is then the solution, by the uniqueness theorem.

Remarks

Example (plane): let Ω={x3>0}\Omega = \set{x_3 > 0} and let a charge qq sit at a=(0,0,d)a = (0, 0, d) with d>0d > 0. The image is the charge −q-q at a′=(0,0,−d)a' = (0, 0, -d). Each point xx with x3=0x_3 = 0 is at the same distance from aa and a′a', so the two potentials cancel there. Example (sphere): let Ω\Omega be the exterior of the ball of radius RR centred at 00, and let a charge qq sit at distance d>Rd > R from 00. The image is the charge −qR/d-qR/d at the point on the same ray at distance R2/dR^2/d from 00. Non-example: for the plane, the charge +q+q at a′a' is not an image charge, since the potential on x3=0x_3 = 0 is then twice that of qq, not zero. With q=1q = 1 and ε0\varepsilon_0 removed, the potential of the charge and its images is the Green's function of Ω\Omega for the Dirichlet problem, up to a constant factor.
