Circulation
Builds on Line integral of a vector fieldVector fieldVorticityStokes' theorem
Definition
Let be open, with or , and let be a continuous velocity field. Let be a closed, oriented, piecewise continuously differentiable curve in . The circulation of around is the line integral where is a parametrisation of with .
Remarks
If is continuously differentiable and bounds an oriented surface in , then Stokes' theorem gives , where is the vorticity. Example: for and the unit circle , , the integrand is , so ; this equals the vorticity times the area . Non-example: for the uniform field , the integral along the upper half of the circle is . This is not a circulation, because the curve is not closed; around the full circle the circulation is . Reversing the orientation of changes the sign of .
