Definition
Let . The equi-affine group of is the group of maps with in the general linear group , and . Affine differential geometry is the study of the properties of smooth curves and hypersurfaces in that are invariant under the equi-affine group.
Remarks
For a regular curve with , the affine arc length is It is invariant: if with , then . For the parabola , one has and , so the determinant is and the affine arc length from is .
Euclidean arc length is not an affine invariant. The shear has determinant , and it maps the segment from to , of length , to the segment from to , of length .
For a nondegenerate hypersurface, the basic invariants are the affine normal vector field and the induced Blaschke metric. Some authors use the full affine group, with any invertible ; then volume is no longer preserved and the invariants change.
