Proof
- Let , , and be as in the statement.
- For each , choose so that the disc lies in and contains no with .
- By the existence of Laurent expansions on , there. By the definition of the residue, .
- Let . By the definition of a Laurent series, it converges at for , that is, at each with .
- At such points the terms are bounded. So for each there is with for all : take and use .
- So the radius of convergence of is , and is holomorphic on by power series are holomorphic.
- Let for . As a composition of complex differentiable functions, is holomorphic on .
- On , the function is the sum of the power series . This series converges on the punctured disc, so its radius is at least , and its sum is holomorphic on all of .
- Let on . It is holomorphic there.
- On , . The right side is holomorphic on all of , since for .
- Define as the value of this right side at . Then is holomorphic on a disc around each , so is holomorphic on .
- By Cauchy's integral theorem on the simply connected set , . By linearity of the contour integral, .
- Fix . The image of is compact and does not contain . By attainment of bounds, .
- On the image of , , with from step 5.
- By the Weierstrass M-test, applied to real and imaginary parts, the series for converges uniformly on the image of .
- By the estimation lemma applied to the tails, .
- For , the function has the primitive on . By the fundamental theorem of contour integration, its integral over the closed path is .
- For , the definition of the winding number gives .
- By steps 16 to 18, .
- Summing over in step 12 gives .
Idea
Near each , the negative powers in the Laurent series form the principal part , which is holomorphic everywhere except at . Subtracting all principal parts from leaves a function with only removable singularities, whose integral over is zero by Cauchy's theorem. In each principal part only the term contributes, and it contributes times the winding number times the residue.
