Proof that compact subsets of a Hausdorff space are closed
Builds on Topological spaceHausdorff spaceCompact setCompactness via open coversClosed setOpen set
Proof
We show that the complement of is open, by separating each outside point from .
- Let be a Hausdorff space and let be a compact subset of .
- If , then is open, and is closed. So assume .
- Fix . For each we have . By the Hausdorff property, choose open sets and with .
- The sets with are open and cover . By compactness via open covers, there are with , and .
- Let . A topology is closed under finite intersections, so is open. Also .
- Let . By step 4, for some . Since and , we get .
- So for each .
- Hence , a union of open sets. It is open by the axioms of a topology.
- Thus is closed in .
Idea
Each point outside can be separated from each point of by disjoint open sets. Compactness lets us use only finitely many of these separations, and a finite intersection of open sets is still open. This gives an open neighbourhood of the outside point that misses .
