Definition

Let Ω⊂ℂ\Omega \subset \C be a bounded simply connected domain with boundary ∂Ω\partial\Omega. A crosscut of Ω\Omega is a set C⊂ΩC \subset \Omega that is homeomorphic to the open interval (0,1)(0, 1) and whose closure is C∪{a,b}C \cup \set{a, b} with a,b∈∂Ωa, b \in \partial\Omega. Then Ω∖C\Omega \setminus C has exactly two connected components.

A null chain is a sequence (Cn)n≥0(C_n)_{n \ge 0} of crosscuts of Ω\Omega such that:

  1. the closures Cn‾\overline{C_n} and Cn+1‾\overline{C_{n+1}} are disjoint for all nn;
  2. for each n≥1n \ge 1, the crosscut CnC_n separates C0C_0 from Cn+1C_{n+1} in Ω\Omega;
  3. the diameter of CnC_n tends to 00.

For a null chain, let VnV_n be the component of Ω∖Cn\Omega \setminus C_n that does not contain C0C_0, so V1⊃V2⊃⋯V_1 \supset V_2 \supset \cdots. Two null chains (Cn)(C_n) and (Cn′)(C'_n), with domains VnV_n and Vn′V'_n, are equivalent if for each mm there is an nn with Vn⊆Vm′V_n \subseteq V'_m and Vn′⊆VmV'_n \subseteq V_m. A prime end of Ω\Omega is an equivalence class of null chains.

Remarks

Example: for the unit disc 𝔻\mathbb{D} and a point ζ\zeta with ∣ζ∣=1\abs{\zeta} = 1, the arcs Cn={z∈𝔻:∣z−ζ∣=2−n}C_n = \set{z \in \mathbb{D} : \abs{z - \zeta} = 2^{-n}} for n≥1n \ge 1, relabelled from 00, form a null chain. Their closures are disjoint, each arc separates the previous one from the next, and their diameters tend to 00. Every null chain of 𝔻\mathbb{D} shrinks to a single boundary point, and the prime ends of 𝔻\mathbb{D} correspond to the points of the unit circle. Non-example: in 𝔻\mathbb{D}, the vertical chords Cn={z∈𝔻:Re⁡z=1/(n+2)}C_n = \set{z \in \mathbb{D} : \operatorname{Re} z = 1/(n+2)} satisfy clauses 1 and 2, but their diameters 21−(n+2)−22\sqrt{1 - (n+2)^{-2}} tend to 22, so clause 3 fails. The impression of a prime end is the intersection of the closures Vn‾\overline{V_n}; it is a nonempty compact connected subset of ∂Ω\partial\Omega. Carathéodory's prime end theorem says that a conformal map of 𝔻\mathbb{D} onto Ω\Omega induces a bijection from the unit circle onto the set of prime ends of Ω\Omega.
