Functions of a complex variable Proof
Proof of the isolated zeros theorem by power series
Builds on Holomorphic functionHolomorphic functions are analyticPower series in the complex planeDisc of convergencePower series are holomorphic in the disc of convergence
Proof
- Let , and be as in the statement. Choose with .
- By holomorphic functions are analytic, there are with for each .
- First, the two cases cannot both hold. If they held with radii and , the point would give and .
- If for each , then on , and case 1 holds with .
- Otherwise let be the smallest index with . Then on .
- Consider the power series . For with , its partial sums are times partial sums of the series in step 5. So it converges at each .
- If a power series converges at a point , its terms tend to and so are bounded. By the definition of the radius of convergence, the radius is at least .
- By steps 6 and 7, the series of step 6 has radius of convergence at least . Let be its sum on .
- By power series are holomorphic, is holomorphic on , hence continuous. Also .
- By step 6, for each , including where both sides are if , and if .
- By continuity of at , there is with for .
- For , both factors and are nonzero. So , and case 2 holds.
- By steps 3, 4 and 12, exactly one of the two cases holds.
Idea
Near the function is a power series. Either every coefficient is zero, so vanishes near , or there is a first nonzero coefficient. In the second case with , and continuity keeps away from zero near .
