General topology Proof

Proof that a continuous image of a compact set is compact

Builds on Compactness via open coversContinuous map of topological spacesPreimage of a setImage of a setCompact set

Proof

We check the open cover condition for f(K)f(K) directly.

  1. Let (Vi)i∈I(V_i)_{i \in I} be a family of open subsets of YY with f(K)⊆⋃i∈IVif(K) \subseteq \bigcup_{i \in I} V_i.
  2. By compactness via open covers, it is enough to find finitely many indices i1,…,ini_1, \ldots, i_n with f(K)⊆Vi1∪⋯∪Vinf(K) \subseteq V_{i_1} \cup \cdots \cup V_{i_n}.
  3. For each i∈Ii \in I, let Ui=f−1(Vi)U_i = f^{-1}(V_i) be the preimage. Since ff is continuous, each UiU_i is open in XX.
  4. Let x∈Kx \in K. Then f(x)f(x) is in the image f(K)f(K), so f(x)∈Vif(x) \in V_i for some ii by step 1. Thus x∈Uix \in U_i.
  5. So (Ui)i∈I(U_i)_{i \in I} is a family of open subsets of XX whose union contains KK.
  6. The set KK is compact. By compactness via open covers, there are indices i1,…,ini_1, \ldots, i_n with K⊆Ui1∪⋯∪UinK \subseteq U_{i_1} \cup \cdots \cup U_{i_n}.
  7. Let y∈f(K)y \in f(K), and write y=f(x)y = f(x) with x∈Kx \in K. By step 6, x∈Uikx \in U_{i_k} for some kk, so y=f(x)∈Viky = f(x) \in V_{i_k}.
  8. Hence f(K)⊆Vi1∪⋯∪Vinf(K) \subseteq V_{i_1} \cup \cdots \cup V_{i_n}. By step 2, f(K)f(K) is compact in YY.

Idea

Pull the cover of f(K)f(K) back along ff. Continuity makes the pulled back sets open, and they cover KK. A finite part of them covers KK, and the matching sets cover f(K)f(K).
