Definition

Let QQ be a smooth manifold with cotangent bundle π ⁣:T∗Q→Q\pi \colon T^*Q \to Q. A point of T∗QT^*Q is a pair (q,p)(q, p) with q∈Qq \in Q and p∈Tq∗Qp \in T_q^* Q. The tautological one-form is the 11-form θ\theta on T∗QT^*Q given by θ(q,p)(v)=p(dπ(q,p)(v))for v∈T(q,p)(T∗Q),\theta_{(q, p)}(v) = p\big(d\pi_{(q, p)}(v)\big) \quad \text{for } v \in T_{(q,p)}(T^*Q), where dπd\pi is the differential of π\pi.

Remarks

In local coordinates q1,…,qnq^1, \ldots, q^n on QQ with the induced coordinates p1,…,pnp_1, \ldots, p_n on the fibres, θ=∑ipi dqi\theta = \sum_i p_i \, dq^i. The form ω=−dθ=∑idqi∧dpi\omega = -d\theta = \sum_i dq^i \wedge dp_i, with dd the exterior derivative, is the canonical symplectic form of T∗QT^*Q; some authors use the opposite sign.

Characterization: for every 11-form α\alpha on QQ, viewed as a section α ⁣:Q→T∗Q\alpha \colon Q \to T^*Q, one has α∗θ=α\alpha^* \theta = \alpha, and θ\theta is the only 11-form on T∗QT^*Q with this property.

Example: for Q=ℝQ = \R with coordinate qq and fibre coordinate pp, θ=p dq\theta = p\, dq; for α=c dq\alpha = c\, dq the section is q↦(q,c)q \mapsto (q, c) and α∗(p dq)=c dq=α\alpha^*(p\, dq) = c\, dq = \alpha.

Non-example: the form q dpq\, dp on T∗ℝT^*\R is not the tautological form. For the section α=dq\alpha = dq, that is q↦(q,1)q \mapsto (q, 1), the pullback of q dpq\, dp is q⋅d(1)=0≠dqq \cdot d(1) = 0 \ne dq.
