Definition

Let J⊆ℝJ \subseteq \R be an open interval, let U⊆ℝ2U \subseteq \R^2 be open, and let F:U×J→ℝF : U \times J \to \R be continuously differentiable. For c∈Jc \in J, let Cc={(x,y)∈U:F(x,y,c)=0}C_c = \set{(x, y) \in U : F(x, y, c) = 0}, a one-parameter family of curves. An envelope of the family is a regular curve γ:J→U\gamma : J \to U such that for each c∈Jc \in J:

  1. γ(c)\gamma(c) lies on CcC_c, that is, F(γ(c),c)=0F(\gamma(c), c) = 0;
  2. the gradient ∇x,yF(γ(c),c)\nabla_{x,y} F(\gamma(c), c) is nonzero;
  3. γ\gamma is tangent to CcC_c at γ(c)\gamma(c), that is, ∇x,yF(γ(c),c)⋅γ′(c)=0\nabla_{x,y} F(\gamma(c), c) \cdot \gamma'(c) = 0.

Remarks

Differentiating F(γ(c),c)=0F(\gamma(c), c) = 0 and using clause 3 gives ∂F/∂c (γ(c),c)=0\partial F / \partial c\, (\gamma(c), c) = 0, where ∂F/∂c\partial F/\partial c is the partial derivative in cc. So the points of an envelope satisfy the two equations F=0F = 0 and ∂F/∂c=0\partial F / \partial c = 0. Eliminating cc gives the discriminant set, which contains the envelope but may also contain singular points of the curves. Example: F(x,y,c)=xcos⁡c+ysin⁡c−1F(x, y, c) = x \cos c + y \sin c - 1, the lines at distance 11 from the origin. Then γ(c)=(cos⁡c,sin⁡c)\gamma(c) = (\cos c, \sin c) satisfies F=cos⁡2c+sin⁡2c−1=0F = \cos^2 c + \sin^2 c - 1 = 0, and γ′(c)=(−sin⁡c,cos⁡c)\gamma'(c) = (-\sin c, \cos c) is orthogonal to ∇F=(cos⁡c,sin⁡c)\nabla F = (\cos c, \sin c); so the unit circle is the envelope. Non-example: the concentric circles x2+y2−c2=0x^2 + y^2 - c^2 = 0, c>0c > 0, have no envelope, since ∂F/∂c=−2c≠0\partial F / \partial c = -2c \ne 0 and clause 3 can never hold together with clause 1. For a regular curve β\beta, the family of its tangent lines, with parameter cc the parameter of β\beta, has β\beta itself as an envelope.
