Proof of the spectral theorem for Hermitian matrices

Builds on Hermitian matrixConjugate transposeInner productSelf-adjoint operatorSpectral theoremUnitary matrixOrthogonal matrixSymmetric matrixOne-sided inverse of a square matrix is two-sidedDiagonal matrixMatrix multiplication

Proof

We apply the spectral theorem to the map x↦Axx \mapsto Ax on ℂn\C^n with the standard inner product.

  1. Let AA be a Hermitian n×nn \times n complex matrix, so A∗=AA^* = A, where ∗^* is the conjugate transpose. Write vectors of ℂn\C^n as columns.
  2. For x,y∈ℂnx, y \in \C^n, set ⟨x,y⟩=y∗x=∑i=1nxiyi‾\ip{x}{y} = y^* x = \sum_{i=1}^{n} x_i \overline{y_i}. It is linear in xx, and ⟨y,x⟩=⟨x,y⟩‾\ip{y}{x} = \overline{\ip{x}{y}}. Also ⟨x,x⟩=∑i∣xi∣2>0\ip{x}{x} = \sum_i \abs{x_i}^2 > 0 for x≠0x \ne 0.
  3. So ⟨⋅,⋅⟩\ip{\cdot}{\cdot} is an inner product on ℂn\C^n. Let T ⁣:ℂn→ℂnT \colon \C^n \to \C^n be T(x)=AxT(x) = Ax.
  4. For a product of matrices, (MN)∗=N∗M∗(MN)^* = N^* M^*, since ∑kmjknki‾=∑knki‾ mjk‾\overline{\sum_k m_{jk} n_{ki}} = \sum_k \overline{n_{ki}}\, \overline{m_{jk}}. Also (M∗)∗=M(M^*)^* = M. Hence ⟨Ax,y⟩=y∗Ax=(A∗y)∗x=⟨x,A∗y⟩=⟨x,Ay⟩\ip{Ax}{y} = y^* A x = (A^* y)^* x = \ip{x}{A^* y} = \ip{x}{Ay}.
  5. So TT is self-adjoint. By the spectral theorem, ℂn\C^n has an orthonormal basis u1,…,unu_1, \dots, u_n with Auj=λjujA u_j = \lambda_j u_j and λj∈ℝ\lambda_j \in \R.
  6. Let UU be the n×nn \times n matrix with columns u1,…,unu_1, \dots, u_n. Let DD be the diagonal matrix with diagonal entries λ1,…,λn\lambda_1, \dots, \lambda_n, which is real.
  7. The (i,j)(i, j) entry of U∗UU^* U is ui∗uj=⟨uj,ui⟩=δiju_i^* u_j = \ip{u_j}{u_i} = \delta_{ij}. So U∗U=InU^* U = I_n, and UU is unitary.
  8. By the one-sided inverse theorem, also UU∗=InU U^* = I_n.
  9. By the definition of matrix multiplication, column jj of AUAU is Auj=λjujA u_j = \lambda_j u_j, and column jj of UDUD is λjuj\lambda_j u_j. So AU=UDAU = UD.
  10. Multiplying on the right by U∗U^* and using step 8 gives A=AUU∗=UDU∗A = A U U^* = U D U^*. This proves the first claim.
  11. Now let AA be a real symmetric matrix, so AT=AA^T = A. Use ℝn\R^n with ⟨x,y⟩=yTx\ip{x}{y} = y^T x, which is an inner product by the real case of step 2.
  12. As in step 4, ⟨Ax,y⟩=yTAx=(ATy)Tx=⟨x,Ay⟩\ip{Ax}{y} = y^T A x = (A^T y)^T x = \ip{x}{Ay}. So x↦Axx \mapsto Ax is self-adjoint on ℝn\R^n.
  13. The spectral theorem gives an orthonormal basis q1,…,qnq_1, \dots, q_n of ℝn\R^n with Aqj=λjqjA q_j = \lambda_j q_j and λj∈ℝ\lambda_j \in \R.
  14. Let QQ have columns q1,…,qnq_1, \dots, q_n, and D=diag⁡(λ1,…,λn)D = \operatorname{diag}(\lambda_1, \dots, \lambda_n). As in step 7, QTQ=InQ^T Q = I_n, so QQ is real and orthogonal.
  15. As in steps 8 to 10, QQT=InQ Q^T = I_n and AQ=QDAQ = QD. So A=QDQTA = Q D Q^T, and Q=Q∗Q = Q^* shows that U=QU = Q can be chosen real.

Idea

A Hermitian matrix acts on ℂn\C^n as a self-adjoint map for the standard inner product. The spectral theorem gives an orthonormal basis of eigenvectors. Put these as the columns of UU: orthonormal columns make UU unitary, and AU=UDAU = UD becomes A=UDU∗A = UDU^*.
