Functions of a complex variable Proof

Proof of Liouville's theorem by Cauchy's estimates

Builds on Entire functionHolomorphic functionComplex differentiabilityCauchy's estimatesZero derivative on a connected open set implies constant

Proof

  1. Let f:ℂ→ℂf : \C \to \C be an entire function, and let MM be a real number with ∣f(z)∣≤M\abs{f(z)} \le M for each z∈ℂz \in \C.
  2. Fix c∈ℂc \in \C and a real number r>0r > 0. The closed disc {z:∣z−c∣≤r}\set{z : \abs{z - c} \le r} lies in ℂ\C, where ff is holomorphic.
  3. On the circle ∣z−c∣=r\abs{z - c} = r we have ∣f(z)∣≤M\abs{f(z)} \le M. So Cauchy's estimates with n=1n = 1 give ∣f′(c)∣≤M/r\abs{f'(c)} \le M / r.
  4. Step 3 holds for every r>0r > 0. Letting r→∞r \to \infty gives ∣f′(c)∣≤0\abs{f'(c)} \le 0, so f′(c)=0f'(c) = 0.
  5. Since cc was arbitrary, f′(c)=0f'(c) = 0 for each c∈ℂc \in \C.
  6. View ff as a map ℝ2→ℝ2\R^2 \to \R^2 by x+iy↔(x,y)x + iy \leftrightarrow (x, y). Fix c∈ℂc \in \C.
  7. By the definition of complex differentiability with f′(c)=0f'(c) = 0, we have ∣f(c+h)−f(c)∣/∣h∣→0\abs{f(c + h) - f(c)} / \abs{h} \to 0 as h→0h \to 0.
  8. Step 7 says that ff is differentiable at cc as a map of two real variables, with total derivative Df(c)=0Df(c) = 0.
  9. The set ℂ=ℝ2\C = \R^2 is open and connected. By step 8 and the theorem that a zero derivative on a connected open set implies constant, ff is constant.

Idea

Cauchy's estimates bound f′(c)f'(c) by the bound of ff on a circle divided by the radius. For an entire function the radius can be as large as we like, while the bound MM stays the same. So the derivative is zero everywhere, and ff is constant.
