Purification of a quantum state

Statement
Let be a complex Hilbert space of finite dimension, and let be a density matrix on of rank . Let be a complex Hilbert space with .
- There is a unit vector with , where is the partial trace over .
- If and are two unit vectors in with , then for some unitary operator on .
Such a vector is called a purification of .
Remarks
By the spectral theorem, with and orthonormal. Choose orthonormal in and put ; a direct computation gives . For uniqueness, the Schmidt decomposition of any purification has the form , up to a choice of eigenbasis. A unitary on that maps the family to the family then relates the two purifications.
Example: the maximally mixed qubit state on is purified by in .
The bound is necessary. If , every vector of has Schmidt rank at most , so its reduced state has rank less than .

For a student
Purification lets one replace mixed states by pure states on a larger space, which often simplifies proofs. It underlies the Stinespring picture of quantum channels and Uhlmann's formula for the fidelity. The uniqueness clause is also the reason why a party holding the purifying system can steer the other party's state.
