Statement

Let HH and KK be finite-dimensional complex Hilbert spaces with dim⁡K≥dim⁡H\dim K \ge \dim H. Let ρ\rho and σ\sigma be density operators on HH. A purification of ρ\rho on H⊗KH \otimes K is a unit vector ψ∈H⊗K\psi \in H \otimes K with tr⁡K∣ψ⟩⟨ψ∣=ρ\tr_K \lvert \psi \rangle \langle \psi \rvert = \rho. Then F(ρ,σ)=max⁡∣⟨ψ,ϕ⟩∣2,F(\rho, \sigma) = \max \abs{\ip{\psi}{\phi}}^2, where FF is the fidelity and the maximum runs over all purifications ψ\psi of ρ\rho and ϕ\phi of σ\sigma on H⊗KH \otimes K. Moreover, for any fixed purification ψ\psi of ρ\rho, the maximum over the purifications ϕ\phi of σ\sigma alone is already F(ρ,σ)F(\rho, \sigma).

Remarks

Proof idea: fix an orthonormal basis (ei)(e_i) of HH and an isometric copy of it in KK, and let Ω=∑iei⊗ei\Omega = \sum_i e_i \otimes e_i. Every purification of ρ\rho has the form (ρ U⊗I)Ω(\sqrt\rho\, U \otimes I)\Omega for some unitary UU, up to an isometry on KK, and similarly for σ\sigma. Then ⟨ψ,ϕ⟩\ip{\psi}{\phi} becomes tr⁡(ρσ W)\tr(\sqrt\rho \sqrt\sigma\, W) for a unitary WW. The largest modulus of such a trace is the trace norm ∥ρσ∥1\norm{\sqrt\rho\sqrt\sigma}_1, reached through the polar decomposition, and its square is F(ρ,σ)F(\rho, \sigma).

Example: if ρ=∣a⟩⟨a∣\rho = \lvert a \rangle\langle a \rvert and σ=∣b⟩⟨b∣\sigma = \lvert b \rangle\langle b \rvert are pure, every purification is a⊗ka \otimes k or b⊗k′b \otimes k' with unit vectors k,k′k, k', and the maximum of ∣⟨a,b⟩∣2∣⟨k,k′⟩∣2\abs{\ip{a}{b}}^2 \abs{\ip{k}{k'}}^2 is ∣⟨a,b⟩∣2=F(ρ,σ)\abs{\ip{a}{b}}^2 = F(\rho, \sigma).

For a student

Many properties of fidelity follow at once from the theorem. Symmetry F(ρ,σ)=F(σ,ρ)F(\rho, \sigma) = F(\sigma, \rho) and F≤1F \le 1 are immediate. Monotonicity under quantum channels follows because a channel has a Stinespring dilation, which maps purifications to purifications. Joint concavity of F\sqrt F also follows. In quantum cryptography and in the theory of decoupling, the theorem is used to build a purification of a nearby state close to a given one.
