Field theory and polynomials Proof
Proof of the fundamental theorem of algebra by Liouville's theorem
Builds on Complex numbersPower series are holomorphic in the disc of convergenceHolomorphic functionComplex differentiabilityEntire functionLiouville's theoremTriangle inequalityContinuous real function on a compact set attains its boundsHeine–Borel theorem
Proof
We argue by contradiction.
- Let , let be complex numbers with , and let .
- Assume that for each .
- The polynomial is a power series with finitely many nonzero coefficients, so its radius of convergence is . By power series are holomorphic, is holomorphic on .
- Then is continuous: as .
- Let , defined on by step 2. For and small ,
- By steps 3 and 4, the right side of step 5 tends to . So is complex differentiable at each point, and is entire.
- Let and . Let .
- By the triangle inequality, .
- Since , we have for . So .
- Since , we have . So .
- The closed disc is closed and bounded, so it is compact by the Heine–Borel theorem.
- The function is continuous by step 4. It attains its minimum on , and by step 2.
- By steps 10 and 12, for each . So is bounded.
- By Liouville's theorem, is constant. Hence is constant, and is bounded on .
- But step 10 gives for . Since , this tends to as .
- Steps 14 and 15 contradict each other. So assumption 2 is false, and there is with .
Idea
If had no zero, then would be an entire function. It is small far away, because grows like , and it is bounded on a large disc by compactness. Liouville's theorem then makes constant, which a nonconstant polynomial cannot be.
