Proof
The forward implication is a determinant computation. The converse is by induction on .
- Suppose is similar to an upper triangular matrix . Similar matrices have the same characteristic polynomial, so .
- The matrix is upper triangular over the commutative ring , with diagonal entries . By the determinant of a triangular matrix, . So splits over .
- For the converse, we prove by induction on : if splits over , then is similar to an upper triangular matrix. For , every matrix is upper triangular.
- Let , and assume the claim for size . The characteristic polynomial is monic of degree . As it splits, with . Comparing degrees gives , and comparing leading coefficients gives . With , we get .
- Let be . Its matrix in the standard basis is , so . Since , the scalar is an eigenvalue of by the roots of the characteristic polynomial. Choose an eigenvector , so and .
- The set is linearly independent, since . By extension to a basis, there is a basis of .
- Let be the matrix with columns . It is the change of basis matrix from the standard basis to . The matrix of in the standard basis is .
- By the change of basis formula, is invertible and . Since , the first column of is .
- So for some row and some matrix .
- By step 9 and the determinant of a block triangular matrix over , . By invariance under similarity, this equals .
- So . The ring is an integral domain, so cancellation gives . Thus splits.
- By the induction hypothesis, there is an invertible matrix such that is upper triangular.
- Let be the block diagonal matrix . It is invertible, with inverse .
- Block multiplication gives . This matrix is upper triangular, since is.
- With the invertible matrix , step 14 says is upper triangular. This completes the induction.
- Now let be algebraically closed. We show by induction on that each monic of degree splits. The polynomial has a root , and the factor theorem gives .
- Here is monic of degree . If , then . If , then splits by the induction hypothesis, so splits.
- So over an algebraically closed field, splits, and is similar to an upper triangular matrix by step 15.
- By the fundamental theorem of algebra, each nonconstant complex polynomial has a complex root. So is algebraically closed, and step 18 applies to .
Idea
A triangular matrix visibly has a split characteristic polynomial. Conversely, a root of gives an eigenvector. Putting it first in a basis makes the first column . The remaining block still has a split characteristic polynomial, so induction triangularises it.
