Functions of a complex variable Proof
Proof that the modulus is multiplicative
Builds on Modulus of a complex numberA complex number times its conjugateComplex conjugateThe complex numbers form a fieldExistence of square roots of nonnegative realsEquality of complex numbers
Proof
- Let and with real.
- We first show that the conjugate of is . We have , so .
- Also . By equality of complex numbers, .
- By a complex number times its conjugate applied to , then step 3, we get .
- Multiplication in is commutative and associative, since is a field. So .
- Applying a complex number times its conjugate to and to gives .
- By steps 4 to 6, the real numbers and have the same square.
- Both numbers are nonnegative, since the modulus is nonnegative. A nonnegative real number has only one nonnegative square root, by existence of square roots. So .
Idea
Squaring removes the square root in the modulus and turns into . Conjugation respects products, so splits as .
